The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust are proud to have helped with a permanent tribute to Peter ‘The Cat’ Bonetti, which was unveiled today at the entrance to the Shed Upper.
Bonetti, who sadly passed away in April this year, played 729 games for the Club, keeping 208 clean sheets and famously helped Chelsea to a FA Cup victory in 1970.
The latest tribute features words from Chelsea Historian, Rick Glanvill, which perfectly captures the emotions of all those who fondly remember his time with the Club.
“Peter Bonetti’s position in the pantheon of Chelsea’s footballing Gods is unassailable. He was the Cat who broke the mould, defied the odds, drew the gasps, earned the cheers and got the cream. All in front of an adoring Stamford Bridge”.
The Trust also helped produce a banner in his honour earlier this year, which now hangs behind the goal at the Shed End and continue to lobby for a statue to be placed at a suitable location within the ground. Both projects were driven by the Chair of the CST, Cliff Auger.
“It was an honour and privilege to meet some of Peter’s family when we hung his banner on the Shed Upper hoardings and it was absolutely right that they were consulted every step of the way for the words on pictures on the new poster”.
The support of the Club is greatly appreciated by the Trust and it is fantastic that they have committed to holding a memorial service, when it is safe to do so. More information on this will be published at a later date.
